中国留学生语法短板｜英文论文时态
英文论文写作
对于中国留学生来说，时态是一个很难把握的东西，高考之前的英语学习中，大部分人掌握了时态使用的各种语法条目，并且熟练掌握了各种根据时间状语判断时态的方法，但是这些在学术英文写作中并不好用。
举个例子
一个学者在1998年，做了一个研究，发现了某个领域中的一个重要规律，之后又有一系列研究，发现了相同或不同的结论。
这样的一个事实，看似是过去发生的时间，但是在论文的不同部分却会以不同的时态呈现，而且不同的作者在一定程度上可以根据自己的态度通过不同的时态表达自己的观点。
最近写开题报告的过程中，不断遇到这样的问题，于是决定认真的研究一下。

引言及文献综述
不同学科，不同类型的文章，在引言部分写的内容有所差异，有的学科的期刊论文引言部分较少，文献回顾是单独在文献综述部分。但是有的学科如心理学是放在引言部分。这两个部分可以用的时态种类比较多：现在时，现在完成时，过去时都可能出现。
这里谈一个问题，对于前人的研究用什么时态？
答案是看情况！！
Many of the lakes and wetlands in the region are located in craters or valleys blocked by early Pliocenelava flows (Ollier & Joyce, 1964).
这里用现在时表明你希望告诉读者，尽管研究是很多年前进行的，你认为研究的发现至今仍然是真实并且有效的。
A great deal of research has been conducted on the basic techniques of nuclear transfer, but few experiments have been carried out to discover themost appropriate age of the cytoplasm to support nuclear transfer most effectively.
这里使用现在完成时，强调在这个领域已经有很多研究，但是存在一个空白。
Swale & Feak （2004, p344）进一步归纳了三种模式
Pattern 1— past tense 使用过去时，这里把研究行为看做一个个体，Researcher activity as agent
例如
Huang (2007) investigated the causes of airport delays.
Reference to single studies 这个模式通常用于一些单个研究，强调具体的过去的研究，这样一来用过去时就很合理了。
Pattern 2— present perfect用现在完成时不把研究活动看作单个个体Researcher activity not as agent，而是关注这个领域reference to areas of inquiry。
The causes of airport delays have been widely investigated (Huang, 2009; Wang, 2008; Johnson et al., 2004).
Since that time, several investigators have used this method.
这两种模式关注的是研究者做了什么；模式3关注的是发现了什么
Pattern 3 使用现在时Present— no reference to research activity不关注具体研究活动而是其对于现在知识的关联。reference to state of current knowledge
The causes of airport delays are complex (Huang, 2009; Wang, 2008; Johnson et al., 2004).
这三种模式可以涵盖2/3的情况，但是有一些动词的使用更灵活。
表示研究者写作或者想法的动词，如state, conclude, claimed比较特殊。
Roger （2004）concluded/has concluded/concludes都是可以接受的，区别是和当前写作者观点的距离，和当前研究的距离，和当前此领域知识的距离。此处的现在时有个术语叫citation present。
此外，当主句用了一般过去时以后，从句一般使用过去时，但是也有使用现在时的。
Roger （2104）found that business failure was correlated most closely with reduced working capital.
Roger （2104）found that business failure is correlated most closely with reduced working capital.
但是在APA中强调了smoothness of expression,该手册认为如果你选择了过去时就保持一致，或者使用现在完成时。Stay within the chosen tense.
方法部分Methods
对于方法的描述用过去时，
Total phosphorous (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) were measured in the laboratory using standard procedures.
除了表格，插图的介绍用现在时
Table 1 above demonstrates the success of cloning invarious animal species.
Figure 2 below shows methylation in mouse 2-cellembryos.
结果部分Results
介绍结果也用过去时
Overall, more than 70% of the insects collected were non-phytophagous.
Results indicated that prolonged exposure to ultra-violetradiation had a positive correlation with the development of melanomas.
当然图表还是用现在时！！！
讨论 Discussion
介绍结果的影响(implications of the results)，可以用现在时
the results of Experiment 2 indicate
总结以往的结果用过去时，解读结果用现在时
Leaf carbon and phenolic content did not differ acrosssites, indicating that the response of secondary plantchemicals such as phenolics to water is complex.
结论 Conclusion
结论部分会用多种时态
Although the study found evidence of tillage and irrigation within the study area【结果】, from the data collected it was not possible to determine if the effects ofagriculture upstream cause (or caused) higher levels oftotal nitrogen downstream [解读]. Further studies are therefore necessary to determine the effects ofagriculture on the health of Stringybark Creek.[展望]

Use the present tense to describe conclusions drawn or results with continuing applicability;
用现在时描述结论或者对现在还有影响的结果。
Use the past tense to describe specific variables manipulated or outcomes measured.
使用过去时描述变量操控的过程和测量结果。
