A young man，a student in one of universities，was one day taking a walk with an old professor，who was commonly called the student’s friend，from his kindness to those who waited on his instructions. As they went along，they saw lying in the path a coat and a pair of old shoes，which they supposed to belong to a poor man who was employed in a field close by，and who had nearly finished his day’s work. The student turned to the professor，saying，“Let us play a trick on the man—we will hide his shoes and ourselves behind those bushes，and wait to see his perplexity when he cannot find them.” “My young friend，”answered the professor，“we should never amuse ourselves at the expense of the poor. But you are rich，and may put a coin in each shoe，and then we’ll hide ourselves and watch how this affects him.” The student did so and they both placed themselves behind the bushes close by. The poor man soon finished his work，and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes. While putting on his coat he slipped his foot into one of his shoes，but feeling something hard，he stooped down to feel what it was，and found the coin. Astonishment was seen upon his face. He gazed upon the coin，turned it around，and looked at it again and again. He then looked around，but no person was to be seen. He put the coin into his pocket，and proceeded to put on the other shoe；but his surprise was doubled on finding the other coin. His feelings overcame him；he fell upon his knees，looked up to heaven and uttered aloud a fervent thanksgiving in which he spoke of his wife，sick and helpless， and his children without bread. The student stood there， deeply affected.“Now，”said the professor，“aren’t you much better pleased than if you had played your intended trick？”The youth replied，“You have taught me a good lesson.” 一天，某高校一名年轻的学生陪着老教授散步。这位慈爱的教授常被称为学生的知心朋友，学生们都期待得到他的指导。 师生二人正走着，瞥见小路上放着一件外套和一双旧鞋子。他们猜想那是在附近地里受雇干活的穷人留下的，而且他很快就要结束一天的劳作了。 学生转身对教授说：“咱们不妨捉弄他一下——把他的鞋子藏起来，然后躲到那片灌木丛后面，等着瞧他找不到鞋子时的窘态。” “年轻人，”教授说，“永远不要拿穷人的痛苦取乐。不过既然你有钱，就在每只鞋里放入一枚硬币，然后我们藏起来，看看会发生什么事。” 学生照办了，随后两人在附近的灌木丛后藏了起来。穷人很快干完了活，穿过田地，走到小路上放鞋子和外套的地方。当他穿上外套，把脚伸进一只鞋里时，他觉得有什么东西硬邦邦的。他俯身摸了摸，发现了一枚硬币。 他的脸上现出惊奇的表情。他盯着硬币，把它翻来覆去地看了又看，接着四处张望，可是什么人也没看到。于是，他把硬币放进了口袋，开始穿另一只鞋。当他发现另一枚硬币时，他的惊讶也加倍了。他激动地跪下来，仰望苍天，大声说出一连串热切的感激话。他提到自己那患病又无助的老婆和没有面包吃的孩子们。 学生站在那里，被深深地感动了。教授说：“现在，你不是比捉弄别人得到了更多的吗？”年轻人答道：“您给我上了一堂好课。” （责任编校 彭益）
