It was a winter morning without sun, the freezing cold quietly nipping at bones of the people waiting for the bus. They were all black.那是一个冬日的早晨，没有阳光，冰冷刺骨的寒风中，人们在等公共汽车。他们都是黑人。

Suddenly, the crowd stirred （混乱）. A minibus rolled along in no hurry. Curiously, the people still stood where they were, looking at the place far away; they seemed to be expecting someone. Who were they waiting for? Did they have a partner who hadn’t come yet?突然,人群中搅拌(混乱)。一辆小公共汽车慢慢地开了过去。奇怪的是，人们仍然站在原地，望着远处的地方;他们好像在等人。他们在等谁?他们的合伙人还没有来吗?

Sure enough, after a figure appeared from afar, the crowd stirred once again. The figure walked hurriedly. It was a woman, a white woman. At this time, the crowd was on the point of cheering. Undoubtedly, she was the partner who the black people had been waiting for.果然，远处出现一个人影后，人群又骚动起来。那人影匆匆地走着。是一个女人，一个白人女人。这时，人群正要欢呼起来。毫无疑问，她是黑人一直等待的伙伴。

Why? You know, in this country, the white and the black were always hostileto each other. What force made these people so close?为什么?你知道，在这个国家，白人和黑人总是互相敌视。是什么力量使这些人如此接近?

Formerly, it was a remote way station. The bus moved to and fro every two hours. The bus drivers had the right to stop the bus only in the presence of white people, but the people who lived nearby were almost all black. It was said that the white woman was a writer who lived in a place three miles away, where there was also a station. But in order to help the black people ride the bus conveniently, she insisted on walking here to take the bus, rain or shine. 以前，这里是一个偏僻的小站。公共汽车每两小时来回一次。公共汽车司机只有在有白人在场的情况下才有权停车。但住在附近的人几乎都是黑人。据说那位白人妇女是一位作家，住在三英里外的一个地方，那儿也有一个车站。但为了方便黑人乘坐公交车，她坚持在这里步行，无论阴晴天气都要坐公共汽车。

The black people almost hugged the writer. “Hi, Susan,” the writer heard someone call her name. Looking up, she saw her friend Jay.“Why do you get on the bus here?” asked Jay in confusion.黑人几乎拥抱这位作家。“嗨，苏珊，”作者听到有人叫她的名字。她抬头一看，看见了她的朋友杰伊。
