歌曲背景
五十年代，美国为了在冷战中占得上风而参与了越战，却令自己陷入了长达二十年的泥潭，不仅消耗了大量的财力，无数年轻人也因此丧失了性命。这首歌写于1963年，当时美国在越战的形势并不乐观，政府为了争夺国际地位不顾本国人民的意愿将更多士兵送入越南，目睹自己同胞满怀爱国热情地参军入伍却为了不必要的战争断送了性命，迪伦用他不卑不亢的语言表达了他对和平的思考，为无数同样不满的美国人发声。
答案在风中飘荡解读
这首歌用了九个how的疑问句反映了迪伦的思考，每三句表达一个较为完整的含义。
How many roads must a man walk down
Before they call him a man
Dylan对传统的男子汉的价值认定提出质疑，认为成为真正的男人这一客观事实不需要依托于被他人认定成为真正的男人的主观判断，想要报国或是得到他人的认可也不须非要来到越战战场牺牲性命。
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand
安息的白鸽象征着和平，重重海洋意味着和平进程的漫长
How many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned
炮弹指代战争，提问何时战争才会结束，人民还要等待多久才能迎来和平
前三句运用了象征手法，道路，白鸽，炮弹各自具有其具体含义，引起听者的思考。
How many years must a mountain exist
Before it is washed to the sea
How many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free
回答第三句关于和平何时到来的问题，用两个exist 将时间具体化，高山终会被冲入海洋，和平也总会到来。但是寿命短暂，性命单薄的人们却等不起这一天的到来
How many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see
歌曲最为精妙的一句，不指责将战士送上战场的"主战派残忍，反而通过认定其为有良知的人进行批判，pretend一词形象地刻画出一个明知自己的抉择会使无数的年轻生命白白牺牲，唯独通过一次次将头转过装作不知情来欺骗自己，最终强忍着做出了残忍决定的高层决策者，把Dylan的痛心和不满呈现了出来，更是从一个特殊的角度辛辣地指出了主战派的穷兵黩武，不顾民生，可说是一针见血，毫不留情。
中间三句逐渐加重语言的分量，让人逐渐意识到战争的沉重，现实的残酷。

最后三句，直抒胸臆，每一句有分量相当足的内涵
